1) An EXTREMELY well-built and finished piece. - Should the people actually responsible for making this product perchance read this review, please accept my thanks for flawless execution in every respect.

Leave aside the fact that it is an elegant piece in an of itself. That much is evident from the product photo.

What makes this product great are, in order:

1) The packaging. There's just NO WAY this piece will get damaged during shipping. Layer upon layer of protective foam keep the individual pieces from scratching each other, and all four corners of the box it comes in have foam corners to prevent dings. Somebody actually thought this through, and it shows.

2) The numbering of the individual pieces in red marker (on the non-showing, un-laminated side) . THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Goes great with the excellent assembly instructions! Somebody's doing that by hand. Duly noted.

3) The EXCELLENT mechanical parts, including the wheels for the sliding panels and even the inset threads for the screw-on items (so they're not just screwed directly into the particleboard). Someone's making these build decisions. Obviously someone who cares about what he or she builds.

4) The EXCELLENT quality of the lamination. It looks stunning. Somebody took the time to do this right. Obviously someone with taste.

This is exactly how affordable furniture items ought to be done. It totally blows away what you can find at Ikea, for example. Now if only ALL the pieces I needed to buy were made this way.

I'm using it as my bar, and I'm very, very happy with it. I'd have no problem recommending this piece to anyone else.

2) Pleasantly surprised. . . - I've put a LOT of furniture together over the years. Desks, dressers, tables, chairs, beds. . . you name it. This unit, by far, is the best engineered item I have come across. Everything lined up, all hardware was of decent quality and it must have been packaged by someone that previously designed Transformer toys. No dings, scratches, smushed corners, etc. (And the box it was delivered in looked like it had been through a war.) Assembly was pretty straightforward. The finished product is relatively solid, the drawers open and close easily, the sliding doors move smoothly and there is absolutely no 'play' in the shelves. The only question remaining is, will it hold up over time? I'll keep an eye on that and update as necessary.

Functionally, this hutch does everything I had hoped for. The two drawers are small but the side storage compartments are nice and roomy. (Deep, wide and adjustable for height.). My only nit to pick is that is a lot darker in color than I had hoped. It isn't black but it is the deepest of browns!
